What a tumultuous decade it’s been in the financial markets. We’ve seen peaks and valleys like never before, and it makes you wonder what lies ahead.

Just ten years ago, things were better than they had ever been in the stock market. Just about everything was at an all time high, and things showed no signs of slowing down. People were buying things blindly, despite the fact that P/E ratios were significantly higher than they had ever been.

People were doubling their money within months, and overnight millionaires were born. Just about everyone out there was trading stocks, and many quit their jobs for the sake of day trading. CNBC was a fixture on television sets around the country.

The NASDAQ’s all-time high of over 5,000 still seems surreal today, and things quickly corrected themselves. Many stocks were fractions of their previous high just months after things peaked.

To think that the indexes were as high as they were seems ludicrous in hindsight. Within the span of a few months, the markets had corrected by over 20%. Late 2001 was even worse, as the events of September 11th brought about new financial worries.

Things slowly rebounded during the next few years, until the Dow Jones industrial average rallied to an all-time high in 2006, breaking 14,000 at one point. Many feared another bubble that was bound to correct itself.

At the same time, oil prices hit all-time highs, and things like forex trading became extremely popular. The mania was back and everyone wanted to be a part of it.

As you well know, the end of the decade ended on a poor note, as we’ve been hit with one of the biggest bear markets in history. On the bright side, things look to be slowly improving and we could very well be on our way back up the roller coaster.

If you’re interested in the forex markets, read this author’s article about the Forex no loss robot ripoff concerns.

Although a few of laws defined in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) are becoming effective for consumers buying Michigan health insurance, consumers should beware of health care fraud. Insurance fraud is the leading cause of skyrocketing Michigan health insurance premiums.

National reports estimate that more than three-fourths of the Michiganites, who do not have medical coverage, today will carry Michigan health insurance in the future.

In the interim, insurance fraud is a mainstay for ongoing concern. Use the following tips to avoid falling prey to a scam:

As far back at 1980, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan has exposed more than $238 million in insurance fraud. From stealing one’s identity, submitting fake medical claims to the misrepresentation of being married health care fraud is prevalent crime.

Based on reports released by Blue Cross Blue Shield, charlatans pose as insurance agents to abscond consumers’ social security numbers. To prevent victimization, never provide any person a social security number or other personal account information over the phone. Instead Contact the company to verify any account discrepancies.

Although open enrollment has an abbreviated time span; deadlines are non-existent for purchasing family or individual Michigan health insurance coverage. Consequently, time sensitive \ ’special offers’ are non-existent with most legitimate health plans.

Since identity thieves are quite crafty at absconding personal information, always validate that the agency’s or agent that the agent or agency’s license is up-to-date. Finally, avoid doing business with any Michigan health insurance company, where the marketing materials are missing fundamental (in example: an exact street address, an email address and a contact phone number).

Although the purpose of the PPACA is to enable Americans to obtain health care, laws do not mandate that policy premiums be withdrawn from a Michigan health insurance policyholder’s credit card or bank account.

Once the U.S. made its opinion in Bates v. State Bar of Arizona which overturned state legislatures from stopping law firms from advertising as an unconstitutional interference with free speech, it was publicly thought that it would consequently be easier to locate legal counsel. This belief was premised on the idea that given that lawyers were sanctioned to contend in the same means as other firms do, it would be simpler to match one’s needs for legal representation and that the costs would drop.

It is a fact that attorney promotion has made it easier to obtain a lawyer. On the other hand, there is still a problem in finding the proper legal professional for one’s specific necessities. If the selected attorney is not experienced, not competent, or is deficient in the willingness or capacity to communicate properly with a client, the client will not be happy with the lawyer’s assistance. Moreover, the end result for the client could be tragic, such as losing a business or being unable to get compensated for wrongs the client sustained at the hands of a at fault third party. To be able to find the very best lawyer, one must have more than a list of names, even if these are experts in the relevant legal area. Clients are best served by asking questions before they choose a lawyer to retain.

Customer unhappiness with lawyers has become a significant challenge. A study taken in 1995 revealed that out of 30,000 respondents, one-third were not well satisfied with the proficiency of their legal professionals’ representation. The reasons for this dissatisfaction varied, ranging from attorneys failing to keep their clients informed on the status of their situations, failing to defend clients’ interests, failing to deal with cases in a timely method, and continually charge unreasonable fees.

The explanation for this widespread dissatisfaction is related to the lack of knowledge by customers on how to come across lawyers experienced with the sorts of issues they are facing as well as figuring out what questions to ask an attorney they are considering retaining. The final results of a one thousand person survey documented in the Florida Bar Journal exposed that the average time spent in acquiring a lawyer was two hours or less. Nearly one half of those surveyed mentioned it was difficult to locate a fine lawyer, and over a quarter of them explained they did not know how to get a legal professional. It is remarkable that 80 per cent of respondents said theywished there was a resource for information on lawyers’ experience.

One difficulty in finding the correct lawyer is the ever growing number of specialties practiced by lawyers. Specialization makes selection more tricky. Law has become more specialized because developments in technology have necessitated the growth of new areas, including Cyberlaw and Internet law. New practice areas of law have also been designed by recently passed laws and regulations from such federal administrative bodies as the Environmental Protection Agency. This could influence and complicate the issues of someone acquiring a business and trying to establish whether the seller or the buyer is liable for cleaning up a toxic waste site.

The growing number of laws and regulations have compelled attorneys to become more specialized in order to keep up with new developments. Moreover, several general areas of the law in which a lawyer may become adept, have now been broken up into specialties. In business law, there are specialists for mergers and acquisitions due to the difficulty involved in these transactions. Even criminal law is not immune to this pattern since some lawyers now specialize in white collar crime.

You wouldn’t choose a doctor based on an advertisement. Why would you do that with a lawyer? Doesn’t it make more sense to ask for a recommendation from a lawyer who has the experience to recommend the right lawyer? End your lawyer search, find the right attorney for your case.

The U.S military is ramping up its dedication to solar energy and other alternate fuels with two new demonstration projects for smart microgrid technology. These microgrids could pull power interchangeably from solar arrays and other sources to cut costs, improve logistics, and reduce the troop safety hazards involved with fossil fuel convoys. As part of the particular military’s drive to guide the civilian sector to more secure and environmentally friendly power sources, the projects are designed to show the effectiveness of microgrids at large civilian facilities in addition to military installations. Business parks, industrial complexes and academic establishments would be prime candidates.

One of the eco friendly microgrid projects is getting completed right now in the world’s biggest Marine Corps base, Twentynine Palms Base in California, while the other will be conducted at the Wheeler Air Base in Hawaii starting in September. At Wheeler solely, the Army is longing for a slice in fuel usage of up to 60 % as well as a reduction in the amount of generators it needs.

The U.S. Military and Lasting Energy

The Department of Defense is actually going after sustainable energy all over the map, which includes microbial fuel cells, portable solar power for the Marines as well as fighter jet biofuel for the Navy as well as Air Force amid a growing number of solar arrays at military bases such as Pearl Harbor. Improving energy efficiency is another point of concentration, by means of such projects as non toxic anti-barnacle coatings for ships’ hulls, next-generation desalination techniques, and diesel-electric crossbreed vehicles. Microgrid engineering suits as a transitional step that enables sustainable power to supplement traditional fossil fuels seamlessly, and as a method to manage an energy future that gives non-renewable fuels the shoe almost entirely for multiple renewable fuel sources.

Microgrids in U.S. Military Bases

With Wheeler, the microgrid made by Honeywell Aerospace will be effective at distributing electricity from solar energy along with other sources, and supply for portable energy that allows soldiers in battle zones and other remote locations to perform with far less resupply baggage than what fossil fuels require. It’s also designed to pull a lot more efficiency out of current “legacy generators” and make sure that energy is supplied with no interruption in emergencies. The main focus is similar at Twentynine Palms, where a demonstration venture coming from General Electric is going ahead. At each, the microgrids are expected to reduce the cost of power supply by decreasing reliance on the outside electric power grid.

The U.S. Military as well as Real Energy Security

In certain civilian circles, power security for the U.S. simply means drilling for more oil in American soil as well as coastal places, and buying much less overseas oil. The military does not see it that way. The Department of Defense has set up an even more informative and comprehensive strategy that calls for ending reliance on non-renewable fuels completely, because of their high dangers for environmental and open public health, their potential to produce worldwide political instability related to weather change, their part as a flashpoint with regards to military action regardless of climate change, their cost, and most importantly the impact of fossil fuels on troop safety and supply logistics within the field. Since the civilian sector did not operate, the military has used an explicit policy of proceeding over and above just meeting the requirements of current environmental restrictions, and using every constitutional methods within its fingertips to guide the nation to a safer, saner method to harvest power. It is past ironic that lots of the exact same politicians and pundits who would otherwise profess to support our soldiers have instead blocked this objective at every opportunity.

High efficiency solar cells tend to be for this moment limited to space applications, on account of their prohibitive prices. The Eindhoven University of Technology from The Netherlands, with a EUR 1.2 million help from the Dutch administration desires to develop ultra-effective solar cells that are in addition cheap. They visualize their cells having a sixty five percent efficiency, something even the satellites might be jealous of.

Presently, thin film solar cells have an effectiveness somewhere about forty percent. Recent studies as well as prototypes made with concentrated solar panels disclosed a conversion of 41 percent, though the researchers coming from TU/ want more. They will use mirror systems which concentrate the particular light one thousand times and make use of hardly any substance for the actual solar cells, which would be very expensive usually if used at complete level.

Jos Haverkort, one of the researchers, stated: “Any time the Netherlands desires to timely participate in a commercial exploitation of nanowire solar cells, there is a great desperation to jump in today.” The research is conducted along with Philips MiPlaza.

Their concept concerning how to make their dream possible banks on putting a lot of subcells(junctions) within each cell, by which each subcell has to transform a specific spectrum of light optimally into electricity. The very best nanowire solar cell made to this very day comes with an 8.4 percent performance. The Dutch researchers want to encase the nanowires inside protective shells to be able to have the same high efficiency just like thin-film cells. Haverkort believes that five to ten junctions are going to be enough to improve the solar cell having the desired sixty five percent efficiency.

Production costs are also slashed by their proposed technology, because the nanowires which make their solar cells could be produced on cheap silicon substrate and also grow more quickly. Gallium and Indium, the 2 costly and rare materials that they will utilize for the tiny solar cells are going to be used very scarcely.

Not too long ago, the price tag on solar cells had been at approximately $3/watt. It is now almost $2/watt (sometimes less). Right after the particular researchers from Eindhoven will have finished their work and the market will have gladly approved their solar cells, the price might fall below 50 cents per watt, which seems incredible. We will wait and we will see.

I truly want a pair of Orange Power Wellies, mostly so I could declare that I am wearing “wellies,” a term we just do not make use of enough on this area of the pond. But additionally because they’re very cute thermoelectric rubber boot footwear which charge your own mobile phone making use of warmth out of your feet. These can come in very handy whenever hiking, camping, or engaging in other activities that lend themselves to wellie wearing yet not necessarily to electrical power outlets.

U.K. mobile rider Orange teamed with green-energy company GotWind to create the boots that sport a power-producing sole which switches foot heat straight into an electric current. This particular “welectricity,” as they’re labelling it (geddit?), could be used to charge a mobile phone, which you plug on to the top of the wellie for a recharge.

The model Wellington footwear will make their debut at the U.K.’s Glastonbury performing arts celebration, a huge open-air entertainment blowout which this particular year goes from June 23 up to June 27. A lot of festivalgoers camp out, which makes it a good spot to show off a model eco-friendly kinetic battery charger. We hope we understood just how much the Orange Power Wellies may cost once they hit the broader segment.

We all do know that 12 hours of stomping through the festival’s muddy grass in the boots will keep your paws dried out and supposedly provide you with enough energy to charge a mobile phone for an hour. Put simply, these kinds of wellies were created for walking–and you are going to have to go plenty if you want to talk and text.

We have come upon other kinetic methods of charging gadgets, of course, which includes a “piezoelectric” rubber material out of Princeton and Caltech which generates electricity any time flexed and could one day locate its way into footwear which charge cell phones as well as other mobile electronic digital gadgets as the person strolls or jogs.

In the case of the particular Orange Power Wellies, power is collected by means of the so-labeled Seebeck effect, in which a thermoelectric device creates a current when there is a different temperature on each side. The actual bottoms of the wellies have a range of semiconductor components sandwiched between a couple of thin ceramic wafers; whenever warmth from the feet are applied on the top section of the ceramic wafer and cold is applied on the opposite side (coming from the cold of the floor), electricity is said to be generated.

This isn’t the very first time Orange has conceptualized of lasting technologies for that Glastonbury Festival. This past year, the business unveiled a concept solar tent in conjunction with the opening of the actual event.

In case you definitely care about your future, be eco friendly. We all could do this by using eco friendly products and participating in environment friendly pursuits.

In yet another example of the U.S. army leading the private world straight into a much healthier and less traditional energy reliant future, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is planning to be eligible for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold accreditation for that brand new energy efficient office building at Fort Belvoir in Virginia. The structure was initially built to satisfy a smaller standard but the Department of Defense has developed a policy of heading beyond minimal compliance with environmental regulations, in order to stimulate a lot more aggressive action regarding environmental protection by the public sector specifically regarding climate change.

USACE Commanding General Lt. Gen. Robert Van Antwerp recently blogged regarding the Corps’s sustainability policy with a line from one of his predecessors: “Environmental integrity and beliefs must be more than an overlay. They have to be described as a bone-deep portion of our method of doing business.” Van Antwerp has also observed that climate change is actually “a very real concern that could have very real consequences worldwide.” That does not leave much wiggle room for helping our troops inside the drill baby drill ethos but then again, that’s the whole point.

The Sustainability Bridge from Military to Civilian

Partly, the new building will function as a highlight for new energy and water conservation plans which help the final outcome and can be used by companies, market, and institutions such as research institutes and medical care facilities. One highlight is actually a visitor facility which will have an energy cost-efficient eco-friendly roof literally covered with greenery to supply insulation and relieve the “heat island” effect. Green rooftops are becoming common at government installations such as military bases and also prisons, but they have yet to make significant inroads somewhere else in the U.S. Having a similar goal in sight, the armed service is also showing cost effective microgrid and solar energy technology at a couple of other bases inside California and Hawaii.

Sustainability for Everyone

The new complex will make use of roughly 30 % less electricity as compared to conventional buildings, and about half the water. While some of the cost savings results from new building methods, materials and technology, others result from common sense solutions which could easily be used as retrofits on existing buildings and grounds. For instance, there is no need for outdoor irrigation, because the landscaping makes use just of drought resistant native plants. Low-flow plumbing fittings and high efficiency lights are utilized all over, and the use of natural daylight is maximized simply by installing cubicles with lower walls, which also helps air to flow better.

Durability together with Alternative Transportation

The modern complex will likewise test the ability of city planners to pull more people out of their cars and into mass transport and some other alternatives. The structure was created to satisfy recommendation #133 of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission, and when finished in 2011 it will shift a large number of new workers in offices straight into Alexandria, an area which by now struggles with excessive congestion.

PACE financing applications are spreading just like wild fire. Created by the town of Berkeley 3 years ago, the program offers city and county loans for energy performance upgrades. These loans are paid back by means of property taxations to promote home solar power. Inside just a couple of years, some twenty three states and the federal government have passed legislation eliminating any legal obstacles to implementing this system, and hundreds of cities as well as counties have or are developing their own Property Assessed Clean Energy versions.

But right now in a fairly odd twist, about half the mortgages in the country may be ineligible for PACE financing. The quasi-public mortgage lenders, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which got a lot of unwanted attention and much-wanted assistance during the fall of the housing business, have reportedly sent “lender guidance letters” suggesting that homes financing through them are prohibited to participate in PACE financing.

Getting rid of half the country’s home owners from participating in a broadly backed, highly successful funding plan would essentially derail that system. The very first Berkeley preliminary system (dubbed Berkeley FIRST) was geared primarily in the direction of solar power and sold out in less than ten minutes. Based on Vote Solar, the advocacy team pressuring the lenders to clarify the correspondences in favor of PACE, about 160,000 brand new long-term jobs would be created by means of PACE plans. Possibly much more could be created taking into consideration the rates at which states are moving promotional legislation.

Certainly, at existing momentum it’s most likely that most fifty states and a large number of cities might have PACE programs or legislation in place. The plans are obtaining very wide support. The solar market has apparently gone into an uproar in response to those correspondences, which went out the 1st week of June.

PACE Mortgage Benefits for Homeowners

Based on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, property owners aren’t allowed to get into any kind of debt which would increase risk to their mortgage loan. Nevertheless, according to Vote Solar, there are a number of provisions within federal PACE guidelines that essentially safeguard mortgage lenders. For instance, law stipulates that PACE-financed improvements must have a fairly quick return, meaning the energy savings resulting from the upgrade should be a lot more than the increase on property taxes incurred to pay for it. This, the argument goes, puts more cash inside the homeowner’s pockets, making these people less likely to fall behind on their home loans and in actual fact decreasing risk.

After that, you will find the substantial benefits of PACE on a bigger economic scale. As mentioned, the program is anticipated to add thousands and thousands of careers countrywide, even by the most conservative quotes. There’s furthermore the issue of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac infringing upon the rights of cities to levy property taxes, particularly considering the fact that the government and twenty three states have handed down laws specifically giving cities that right.

Help Preserve PACE!

You can read more of the actual pro-PACE argument and, if you like, sign a petition at VoteSolar.org towards the Federal Housing Finance Authority (FHFA), urging a conference among federal entities along with the country’s two largest home lenders, as well as a clarification of the somewhat cryptic lender letters.

Beef choices and also the environment - grain or grass fed?

Beef choices and also the environment – grain or grass fed?

It is a bit difficult writing about the topic of meat as it can be an extremely polarizing concern. Thus to begin with, I’d just like to say that reducing beef intake is actually a great way to lessen the environmental effect of one’s lifestyle – and when you choose following a vegan or vegetarian diet, even more power to you.

Having that crucial point made; let us push on. The majority of us aren’t likely to stop eating beef in the near future, but we could make some more informed choices about our meat purchases. Being familiar with the problems may also be a trigger for lowering or slowing meat consumption now, or providing the way in producing that choice later on.

Back when beef showcased very, very intensely in my personal diet plan (I am nevertheless an omnivore, carnivore, whatever you desire to call it); the mention of grain fed meat could have me drooling and imagining fat succulent meats sizzling over a charcoal barbecue grill.

These days, the term brings up all sorts of conflict within me and I tend to eat very little from it. Exactly what are the reasons?

Cattle were not designed to take in grain

It makes sense yet it by no means occurred to me until someone pointed it out. The intestinal system of livestock was designed to deal with grass, not grain – and regrettably the majority of the meat we buy these days is grain provided.

While grain helps fatten the animals up very quickly, it seems that it’s actually, really bad for livestock and could cause painful disorders just like feedlot bloat as the outcome of a diet containing too much starchy foods and too minimal fiber. Unattended, feedlot bloat can suffocate cattle.

Acidosis is yet another complication that may also be a painful or life threatening problem. Based on Michael Pollan, writer of books including “The Omnivore’s Dilemma” and “Food Rules”, acidosis could lead to bloat, looseness of the bowels, ulcers, liver health problems and a general deterioration of the immune system, which means the creatures are susceptible to microbial attacks and all sorts of other illnesses.

Grain provided meat usually has to be taken care of more heavily with dietary supplements and antibiotics to make up for what they are lacking from the diet plan that was meant for all of them. Then there is the issue of other stuff becoming introduced to their feed such as (based on local regulations) ammonium sulfate, blood meal, bone meal, dried up cattle manure, defluorinated phosphate, fat from poultry, meat meal, poultry litter and also dried poultry manure – once again, to make up for the things they miss out on by being grain fed.

Must we torture our own meals? I hate to think of the collective suffering going on right this minute due to some factory farming practices.

Huge swathes of rainforest along with other timbered areas have been wiped out to grow corn and soya beans to feed to cattle. While soya beans are not considered a grain (they’re a legume), they could have the same effect as corn regarding the animals.

With thousands of college graduates across the state, decent percentages are facing a gap in Illinois health insurance. Despite the Patient Protection And Affordable Care Act (PPACA), small businesses, corporations, and other employers are not too hasty to implement the dependent coverage clause until it is required in 2011. The quandary leaves many Illinois graduates sans economical medical coverage until perhaps employment.

Mike Novelli, the president and a licensed agent of Illinois Life and Health, represents five major Illinois health insurance companies, and forewarns consumers to explore temporary coverage versus COBRA benefits.

While the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) mandates that employees or dependents, losing their Illinois health insurance benefits, have the right to continue benefits, COBRA premiums are quite more expensive than other health plans.

Prior to opting to continue with COBRA benefits, students should compare the premiums to other creditable Illinois health insurance plans. Unless one suffers from a preexisting medical condition, Illinoisans have numerous affordable medical care alternatives.

For the graduate, whom is waiting for gainful employment, a short-term Illinois health insurance plan bridges the gap for temporary, but adequate health care. With unusual viruses, unforeseen major illnesses and even freak accidents, having medical coverage prevents the event of being left with exorbitant medical bills and thus financial devastation.

Major medical insurance agencies provide short term plans, broken up in various terms: 3-month, six-months or a year. Not to mention, some Illinois health insurance companies administer incentives for prepayments; however, remember to compare all the plan’s features (in example: out-of-pocket expenses, preventative services, premiums, and deductibles).

Depending on the insurance company, some have already incorporated some of the PPACA’s requirements. For instance, certain Blue Cross Blue Shield’s Blue plans provides some of the preventative services as mandated in the PPACA.

Nonetheless, as additional terms become effective with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), students will have the ability to secure feasible Illinois health insurance, sans the restrictions and exclusions as seen in the past.
