When it comes to movies, one of the most revered genres is War. War films have a certain prestige to them, and are expected to be great. It is not a coincidence that so many of the best award winning films of all time happen to be based around historical wars and battles.
In my opinion, the following are some of the greatest war movies of all time. Forrest Gump does not count.
One film that I regretfully have to put on this list is Braveheart. Regardless of Mr. Gibson’s personality and beliefs in real life, he knocked it out of the park with this film. It is not a coincidence that it won the Academy Award for Best Picture of the Year.
Released in 1970, Patton was one of the best biopics of all time, about the controversial United States General of the same name. This film also won best picture of the year, and is considered a classic by any US film history enthusiast.
Schindler’s List is probably the most upsetting movie I have ever seen. Spielberg delivers on all accounts with this film that plays out more like a documentary than an original work. If you are looking for a World War II-based film that will change your way of thinking, this is it.
Saving Private Ryan is another movie that has to make my list. Also brought to us from the lens of Steven Spielberg, and based on the same war as Schindler’s List, this movie takes more of a look at the battle front. According to veterans of this war, the Battle of Normandy is depicted incredibly accurately in this film.
I also have to mention Lawrence of Arabia. Peter O’Toole stars as P.E. Lawrence in this film about a controversial British military figure and his inner conflicts during war. This film is the definition of a classic.
It is amazing to look at this list and realize how many other great films could have made it. I just may have to make another list.

Some people have what it takes to be a leader, others do not. Unlike an underling, who often just has one task to dedicate themselves to, a leader’s scope must be comprehensive and wide, encompassing the work (and, in some cases, fates) of all the people he leads. Not everyone can deal with that kind of responsibility.
Leaders have to be resourceful, often acting without the established courses of action available to those they lead. They must treat their charges well, not abusing their power but also maintaining order and efficiency. This can be very taxing, since there is no one to tell the leader what decision to make or what path to choose; he or she trust trust their own judgment.
Having an unshakable core to support whatever decision they have to make is important for those in the leadership role. Many choices can be tough, and without a steadfast center, leaders would never be able to make peace with a potentially dangerous decision; every time they chose wrong, the guilt would be unbearable.
No one wants to be led by anyone they don’t believe in. People want leaders they can’t rely on, leaders they trust, and if the person leading them constantly falters or seems unsure of themselves, they will inevitably be replaced. This is why a leader has to be confident at all times. When a situation hits him dead on, he has to be able to hit back with equal force, outlining a course of action with determination and conviction.
Sometimes life takes us into the morally gray area and it’s next to impossible to know what the right path is. People who can choose a path and live with whatever the consequences may be make strong leaders. They decide what the best course of action is for themselves as well as the people they lead.
A leader should be open to input from all sides, and should judge all input equally, regardless of source. Listening is a powerful skill, and can make a leader all the better. Leaders have to be able to make their own decisions, but that doesn’t mean they can’t listen to other people’s opinions.
And, last but not least, a leader needs backbone. They have to be able to stand up for what they believe in, even when facing enormous opposition. Without this quality, one cannot be a leader.
In summary, good leadership skills are about knowing what your choices are, choosing the best option, defending your choice, and believing in yourself even when others don’t. That is what makes a good leader.

What a tumultuous decade it’s been in the financial markets. We’ve seen peaks and valleys like never before, and it makes you wonder what lies ahead.
Just ten years ago, things were better than they had ever been in the stock market. Just about everything was at an all time high, and things showed no signs of slowing down. People were buying things blindly, despite the fact that P/E ratios were significantly higher than they had ever been.
People were doubling their money within months, and overnight millionaires were born. Just about everyone out there was trading stocks, and many quit their jobs for the sake of day trading. CNBC was a fixture on television sets around the country.
The NASDAQ’s all-time high of over 5,000 still seems surreal today, and things quickly corrected themselves. Many stocks were fractions of their previous high just months after things peaked.
To think that the indexes were as high as they were seems ludicrous in hindsight. Within the span of a few months, the markets had corrected by over 20%. Late 2001 was even worse, as the events of September 11th brought about new financial worries.
Things slowly rebounded during the next few years, until the Dow Jones industrial average rallied to an all-time high in 2006, breaking 14,000 at one point. Many feared another bubble that was bound to correct itself.
At the same time, oil prices hit all-time highs, and things like forex trading became extremely popular. The mania was back and everyone wanted to be a part of it.
As you well know, the end of the decade ended on a poor note, as we’ve been hit with one of the biggest bear markets in history. On the bright side, things look to be slowly improving and we could very well be on our way back up the roller coaster.

Although small in number, the various ethnic communities that have immigrated to Ireland provide native Irish and tourists with an opportunity to learn about their culture and their way of life. Their move to Ireland may not always have been easy, but the introduction of various government and community initiatives has given everyone the opportunity to experience ethnic minorities and their cultural celebrations throughout the country.
One such festival is the Mela, a multi-cultural festival organized by Aristka who promote ethnic arts. Held in Northern Ireland as part of the St Patrick’s Day celebrations, this festival showcases Indian and other arts, foods and culture. Aristka is involved in various other celebrations throughout the year, including the Hindu Festival of Lights. These festivals educate the community and invite participation and enjoyment. Another festival that is growing in popularity throughout Ireland is Africa Day. The Indian community celebrates their holy days and festivals as well, embracing the local community regardless of their cultural beliefs. Art exhibitions, musical concerts and theatrical performances are used to showcase not only the culture but also the talent of many immigrants to Ireland, providing entertainment and education to the larger community.
A visit to Ireland will certainly be full of Irish history, culture and the beautiful countryside. Ireland has two magnificent zoos to cater for the visitor looking for animals from further afield.
