The Last Ten Years Of Financial World In Review

What a tumultuous decade it’s been in the financial markets. We’ve seen peaks and valleys like never before, and it makes you wonder what lies ahead.

Just ten years ago, things were better than they had ever been in the stock market. Just about everything was at an all time high, and things showed no signs of slowing down. People were buying things blindly, despite the fact that P/E ratios were significantly higher than they had ever been.

People were doubling their money within months, and overnight millionaires were born. Just about everyone out there was trading stocks, and many quit their jobs for the sake of day trading. CNBC was a fixture on television sets around the country.

The NASDAQ’s all-time high of over 5,000 still seems surreal today, and things quickly corrected themselves. Many stocks were fractions of their previous high just months after things peaked.

To think that the indexes were as high as they were seems ludicrous in hindsight. Within the span of a few months, the markets had corrected by over 20%. Late 2001 was even worse, as the events of September 11th brought about new financial worries.

Things slowly rebounded during the next few years, until the Dow Jones industrial average rallied to an all-time high in 2006, breaking 14,000 at one point. Many feared another bubble that was bound to correct itself.

At the same time, oil prices hit all-time highs, and things like forex trading became extremely popular. The mania was back and everyone wanted to be a part of it.

As you well know, the end of the decade ended on a poor note, as we’ve been hit with one of the biggest bear markets in history. On the bright side, things look to be slowly improving and we could very well be on our way back up the roller coaster.

How To Run A Wedding Car Business

Have you ever thought about running a wedding car business? Although it can be stressful, because you do not want to let anybody down on their big day, it is also interesting and exciting.

Some of the benefits are that you get to own good-looking vehicles – maybe a Rolls Royce or a Bentley and they are tax-deductible; you meet new people under happy circumstances and you are in the position to help them have a wonderful wedding day.

It is a very demanding industry, because you always have to bear in mind the desires of your clients and think about how you can realize and expand their’ wishes. That is difficult enough, but you also have to stay competitive. I hope that the following tips will be helpful.

1] Take care of the conditions under which you keep your vehicles. If you can afford to garage them, they will not collect dust and bird droppings so the paintwork will look better for longer. Do not have a gravel drive, because of possible scratching to the coachwork of the cars.

2] Get one or two really lovely cars. You will need to do a bit of research to find out what couples in your area like, but as a rule of thumb a Rolls Royce or a Bentley are sure bets. Or maybe a stretch limousine. Old vehicles go down well too. Build up your fleet of cars step by step but increasingly. Offer your clients as much choice as you can realistically afford to do.

Many wedding couples will not only require the wedding car, but also vehicles for the guests. Many of them want limousines or old vehicles for their wedding day. But a lot of other vehicles are required for the guests. Be adaptable and consent to bedeck the cars according to the couple’s wishes with flowers and ribbons.

2] Employ good, sympathetic personnel. A fully trained chauffeur is a necessity, but a military style chauffeur can add to your firm’s image.

3] It is a good idea to offer different packages or elements that a couple can use to build a package. So, you could offer transport from the bride’s house to the church as one element. From the church to the restaurant as another element and from there to the chosen hotel, the airport or the railway station, as another element.

4] Make sure that your clients know exactly how long they have exclusive use of the cars for. This is useful for them, so that they know precisely how long they have to take photos, eat or chat.

Transport plays a huge and vital part in any wedding day celebrations. In fact, poorly timed or scruffy transportation can ruin a wedding day. If you let that happen, your firm’s standing will suffer badly, particularly in a town or village. You will need a high sense of responsibility; reliable, well-trained, sensitive staff and high quality cars that look the part. White wedding cars are popular, but other colours are acceptable, especially for the guests.

Gettysburg, Pennsylvania – The Battleground

If you are at all interested in either Pennsylvania or American history, you will surely have heard of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and the historic activities that took place there for the period of the American Civil War. The three day long battle that took place there in July 1863 was cruel and bloody, but was hailed as a victory for the Unionist North.

Even so, one quick look in the Union Army burial ground in the Gettysburg National Cemetery on Cemetery Hill will persuade you that the victory came at a very high cost. The cost in human life and human suffering was gigantic on both sides. Later on in the same year, Abraham Lincoln gave a discourse which was to become famous throughout the world as the Gettysburg Address.

These days, the Gettysburg National Military Park is a tranquil place, but it serves as a moving reminder of the battle that was fought, the strategies employed, the heroism of the combatants and the willingness of military leaders to sacrifice the common soldier for political objectives.

If you go to the Gettysburg National Military Park, you would do well to start your tour in the visitors’ centre. There you will be able to pick up books, pamphlets and leaflets to help you orientate yourself when you are on the battleground, even if you are familiar with how and where the actual battle was fought.

If you feel that it would be too much for you to work things out for yourself or if you do not have a lot of time, you could join one of the regular guided tours. If you are somewhere in between these two definitions, you could first watch a film in the Cycloarma Center, where there are also historical items recovered from the battleground on the numerous excavations that have taken place over the nearly 150 years since the battle at Gettysburg took place. If you do not look around the museum before you go on to the battlefield, you should look later.

If you are going to Gettysburg to enlighten your children about that most important era of American history, you should first check out the special interest programmes available to 7-12 year olds in the warmer summer months. One programme allows children to enlist in the army of 1863 for an hour in order to get a sense for what it was like for soldiers of the day and what it was like for the children that helped them go into battle.

Another programme consists of a story-teller telling stories of what it was like to be a youngster in the days of the Civil War and the role that kids played both in the war and in civilian life back then.

Gettysburg is a spellbinding place to go to whether your family was involved in the battle there or not. Many of the combatants’ names and place names like Devil’s Den and Cemetery Hill will already be known to you and a visit to the Gettysburg National Military Park will bring them back to life for you.

Coastal Cottages

Seaside holidays are extremely popular which is why every year, millions of tourists head for seaside beaches. Perhaps you like coastal holidays too. seaside holidays are fabulous, but that can be the problem too, because it frequently means overcrowding, queuing, rubbish and noise. Have you ever thought about renting your own private coastal cottage? Many only dream about it, but it is not that difficult or costly to arrange actually.

One point to bear in mind is that, public beaches are well-known and that is why they get too busy. However, private coastal cottages are often secluded or on private beaches, which makes for a much quieter holiday. Often, local people living only miles from the cottage do not know that they are there. In spite of this, most coastal cottages do not cost a fortune to rent.

These coastal cottages are to be had in many countries around the world. They are certainly very popular in Britain, Europe and the United States. The level of privacy and the facilities available will depend on where you go. A coastal cottage in Wales will give you a far different holiday than a coastal cottage in southern France or Coney Island.

Many coastal cottages are located near a popular vacation destination. Not right in the middle of the venue, but generally a few miles or less outside, so that you can easily drive in or even walk in, if you want some livelier entertainment. Typical coastal cottage leisure activities include swimming, sailing, fishing and walking.

Of course, one of the important considerations when renting a cottage is the rental fee itself. Now the funny thing is that is not nearly such a big consideration as you might think it would be. The macro location is more crucial than the micro location. As a result, Wales might be cheaper than the south of France, but within Wales itself, there is not a huge variation in price, when you equate like with like. Obviously, a five-bedroomed coastal cottage will be more expensive than a three-bedroomed one.

Another point worth looking into is the ownership of the coastal cottage. Is it owned by a private individual who lives near-by or is it owned by a large business. Is the cottage a genuine, original cottage or is it a new, mock cottage building? If it is old, is it connected with anyone famous or a famous event? Knowing these facts can all enhance your enjoyment.

Make certain that you are given some maps or drawings so that you can find the spot easily. Particularly if you are travelling to the cottage in the evening or in the dark. Things often look considerably different at night than in the daylight, and if your chosen cottage is in a quiet spot, there may not be any street lighting

Finally, get hold of some pictures of inside and outside the coastal cottage you finally decide on and then reserve it early, because the best coastal cottages go earlier and earlier every year as this form of vacationing becomes ever more popular.

Forex Trading On The Internet

Picture being able to work any hours you like, day or night, from home. Picture if most of the work involved with this dream job was reading and thinking. No heavy manual work and no going to bed early so that you can get up early, unless you want to. Well, these jobs do exist. The newer ones are all Internet based, but you seem to be on the Internet anyway. You could build websites, blog, play the stock markets or you could try Forex trading.

Although each of these new jobs has its own merits, I want to talk about the Internet and Forex trading, because it has the most potential. Blogging and websites will make you some money and there is little financial danger. The stock markets are only open about nine hours a day, but Forex never stops.

It is live literally twenty-four hours a day. This is because Forex exists only in machines, there is no Forex Building in the same way that there is a London or New York Stock Exchange, where people actually, physically go to work five days a week.

At this stage of the game, I will assume that you are not going to give up your day job and that Forex will be a sideline. With any luck a profitable one, but first you have to learn how to get started. Go to your favourite search engine and type in ‘forex brokers’ or ‘forex platforms’.

A dozen or more will crop up and you should visit the individual websites and save three or four that you like in a Favourites Folder. Then write down there titles, for example, AC Markets, and type into the SE: ‘AC Markets problems’. You may want to remove a few from your chosen ones after doing this. Anyway, eventually, you will come up with a Forex broker that you are content with.

Pick a broker that offers a free Forex trading account and a free practice trading account as well. A good Forex trader will supply you with free online charting services and access to information on the currencies that they deal with. So begins the protracted process of learning the principals of Forex trading. The point is that you should be able to learn how to place Forex trades sensibly based on knowledge that you have gleaned and test your ideas all free of charge, until you feel self-confident enough to risk some of your own, hard-earned, real money.

One of the good elements of Forex trading is ’set and forget’. For instance, your research may lead you to suppose that over the next month, the GBP will rise by two cents against the USD and then fall back to being one cent ahead of where it is now. These trades can be programmed in automatically, so that if the GBP starts rising, the software buys for you and then sells for you at a given price, waits for a given fall and then buys back again. This is very useful, if you are convinced but you have other things to do, like a real job to get on with.

The main thing to keep in mind is that you have all the time in the world, so take your time and be cautious. Learn how to play the game before you take a seat at the table and you should find yourself earning a nice little extra income.

Selecting An Online Forex Trading System

The Forex market used to be the preserve of governments, banks, financial institutions and very rich people. That was not so long ago either. Fifteen years ago, perhaps, maybe even less. The advancement that changed all that is the Internet. These days, the Forex market is played by small companies and even ordinary people as well as the big players of former times.

Whether or not it is a level playing field for the big and the small, you will have to decide for yourself, because so much shame has come to light recently about issues in other financial markets. However, the Forex is so big that it is hard to think that it can be manipulated. (Although George Soros is blamed for a run on the GBP in the early nineties).

It is probable that the big players have more access to information that the rest of us. Particularly governments as they introduce the policies that affect the way a currency moves. Information is the key to successful Forex trading. Therefore, you have to know the terminology of the Forex market; how to utilize the financial instruments that your broker makes available to you and you have to be up-to-date on the information affecting your target currencies.

Therefore, it stands to reason that you should decide to open an account with a Forex broker that provides the most advanced trading platform, supplies the best training and distributes the best, up-to-date news and market analysis.

The best way of choosing an online Forex trading system is to Google “online Forex trading system” and pick six of the most impressive to you and save them into a folder in your ‘Favourites’ list. If you are new to Forex trading, you should read the companies’ training literature. This will give you an feeling of how much the broker cares. Try putting some of the principles that you learn into practice in a ‘practice account’. The practice account is free, but sometimes you may only run a practice account for a month or so.

You will discover that some online Forex trading systems are easier to use than others. One online Forex trading system might suit you but not suit me, it is a personal preference. Some online Forex trading systems will have all the bells and whistles, but you may prefer a simpler system. For instance, if your computer is slow or your Internet connection is slow, you may want to be able to turn off any features that you do not need in order to speed your system up.

Another aspect that you should pay close consideration to when selecting an online Forex trading system, is the system’s functionality for technical analysis. You will have to have free access to the historical data of the currencies that you are interested in. These data can then be interpreted by graphs, which may be able to help you choose which way a particular currency pair may go. Breaking news is also very important and your broker should supply you with all the latest news stories ‘hot off the wire’.

Tools For Forex Trading Strategies

Everybody has to have money, that is obvious enough, but how do you get it, or enough of it, on a recurring basis to be able to enjoy a reasonably comfortable life? Most people work for somebody else, some others prefer to set up their own company in order to be their own bosses and still others choose to buy and sell intangible goods like stocks and shares. A concept comparable to this last one is trading currencies on the foreign currency exchange, which is usually shortened to Forex or even FX.

The Forex is the largest market in the world. It turns over trillions of dollars every day and is actually open 24/7. Every country in the world has access to the Forex and every government and every bank trades on it every day. With all this money sloshing about it is clear that there is a lot of money to be made from trading on the Forex. However, one must never forget that when someone wins, someone else loses. Billions of dollars are made and lost every day.

Never let anyone persuade you that making money on the Forex is easy. If it were easy, everyone would be rich and if everyone were rich no one would be. There is no easy money. However, what Forex traders try to do is develop a strategy that works for them. Once a profitable strategy has been developed, traders try to utilize that same strategy over and over again. This is a way of minimizing risk and, it is hoped, maximizing profits.

As you are developing your own strategy or maybe adapting one that you have read about in a book on Forex strategies, you will come across different terms which describe tools that are employed in parts of those strategies. One of the most common tools is known as ‘Leverage’.

Leverage actually multiplies the value of your trading account. Leverage is often 100 times the actual, funded value. Therefore, if you have $1,000 in your account, you can exploit leverage to ‘play’ with $100,000. This evidently gives you higher gains or losses and is a dangerously useful tool.

Another tool to be utilized in your overall strategy is the ‘Stop Loss Order’. In many ways, the stop loss order can be used to stop you making a complete idiot of yourself with leverage. For instance, if you bought the USD/GBP at 1.50 and expected it to go to 1.60 and it does head off in that direction all well and good. However, you could place a stop loss order on the transaction at, say, 1.47, so that if it goes in the wrong direction you can only lose a ‘little bit’. The stop loss order is there to permit you to run your profits, but minimize your losses.

An ‘Automatic Entry Order’ allows you to enter the market at a price prearranged by you. So, for example you may think that the USD would never sink below GBP 0.66 in a million years, but if it does hit 0.66, you are so sure that it will rebound that you want to buy at that price at any time. You set an automatic entry order and you will never miss that chance, if it ever arises.

These tools or strategies can be used in an overall strategy to minimize risk, but not eradicate it, you still have keep your eye on the ball and learn the rules of the game.

Barry, South Wales: Ancient History: Part 2

In the Eighteenth Century, they found dishes, saws, knives, flints, a scraper, a prehistoric horn celt with strange markings, a spokeshave and some arrowheads from the Neolithic Period. These artifacts are safely ensconced in the Museum of Wales in Cardiff, but unfortunately, no one at the time thought the find significant enough to warrant a dig and now there are houses on it.

They also found an ancient Roman kitchen complete with utensils and food remains which appeared to have been abandoned in a hurry like the Marie Celeste. That wasn’t investigated either. In 1533, the King’s Antiquary, Leland, was told to tour all places where records were held. It took him nine years and his description of the island was as follows:

“It is about a mile in circumference and has good corn, grass and some wood, and there is no dwelling on the Island, but in the midst of it is a fair little Chapel of St. Baruch which is visited by many pilgrims. It took the name Barri from this holy man who was buried there and whose remains are yet on the Island”. (The Welsh name for Barry is Y Barri).

Vikings ravaged the coast of South Wales in the tenth century. They often took hostages from the monasteries, but they did not seem to want to live in the area. For a long tim, the island was known as the “Saints’ Retreat” or the “Island of Saints”. Afterwards, in the sixteenth century, it was inhabited by smugglers and pirates and was called the “Smugglers’ Fortress”. This became serious as it grew simultaneously with the rise of Bristol, Britain’s second largest port.

The island soon became the centre for smuggling and piracy in the Bristol Channel. In 1784, Barry Island became known as ‘The Fortress of Knight’. Kight was the most frequent and feared pirate in the channel but people were too afraid to speak out against him. He was also a local celebrity. His ship was armed and named ‘John O’ Combe’. The navy eventually routed him and he moved down to Lundy Island, which he also turned into a fortress. However, he and his successor, Arthur, went back to Barry so often that Customs requested the government to send a cutter to Penarth and 60 soldiers to Barry on permanent duty.

The seaside village of Rhoose was so renowned for its wreckers that George II sent troops to break up the gangs. They landed at Aberthaw, just up the coast a bit, “the Rhoose men’s favourite landing zone, from where they could easily transport the contraband along Port Road to Cardiff, the main market for such things”. While building the docks at Barry in the late Nineteenth Century, several large caves were filled in. They were probably used by the pirates who were moved on again in or about 1850.

Holidays And Holy Days

Congress and the president have designated ten days as federal holidays. Being ‘federal’, these holidays theoretically only pertain to federal employees and residents of the District of Columbia, although they are so widely observed that they can be thought of as national holidays.

Officially, it is up to each individual state to designate public holidays. If the holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the Friday before or the Monday after is given in lieu to make a long weekend.

New Year’s Day (January 1) – celebrating the New Year dates back to pre-Christian times, when rites were performed to try to ensure the return of Spring.

Martin Luther King Jnr. Day (third Monday in January) – before he was assassinated in 1968, Martin Luther King Jnr. was the principal civil rights leader of the 1950’s and 1960’s. He was given the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. Congress set this day aside to commemorate his life and accomplishments in 1983.

Washington’s Birthday (third Monday in February) – initially it was celebrated on Washington’s real birthday, the 22nd of February, but it was moved in 1971 to make a long weekend. It is sometimes known as Presidents’ Day, because it is near Lincoln’s birthday on the 12th February.

Memorial Day (last Monday in May) – also called Decoration Day, it honours soldiers fallen in battle. It originates from the Civil War and is traditionally marked by parades and services.

Independence Day (4th July) – this, the most significant US holiday, marks the 1776 signing of the Declaration of Independence from Great Britain. It was first celebrated in 1777 and is marked by fireworks, parades and speeches.

Labor Day (first Monday in September) – this, the suggestion of Peter J. McGuire, the president of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners, was taken up in 1894 to celebrate American workers.

Columbus Day (second Monday in October) – Christopher Columbus and his crew landed in the Bahamas on Oct 12th 1492. It was first commemorated in 1792, although it was not officially recognized until 1909. It is a cause of special pride to Italian-Americans, who claim the Genoan voyager as their own.

Veterans Day (Nov 11th) – or Armistice Day commemorates the end of the First World War on Nov 11th 1918. It was made a legal holiday in 1938, but its name was changed in 1954 to honour all American veteran soldiers.

Thanksgiving Day (fourth Thursday in November) – it was first commemorated in Plymouth County, Massachusetts in 1621, the year in which the Pilgrims landed in the New World to give thanks for the new harvest and the new land they had colonized. President Lincoln made it a holiday in 1863.

Christmas Day (December 25th) – Christians commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ.
