Political Predictions For 2010

2010 will be a hard year for politicians all over the world. Hard times make for low approval ratings, especially for incumbent politicians, who usually get the blame for everything that is going on, even if the current troubles are largely the fault of their predecessors. Elections across the globe will continue to see the same trend as those held in 2009, with the politicians and parties that are in power before the elections suffering losses, and perhaps even losing their power completely. There has been a serious drop in the trust and respect held by the people for their politicians in many countries, partly due to the economic crisis, and this is likely to continue in 2010. Many voters are likely to feel more apathetic, with disillusion against the entire political system becoming a more significant factor in many elections than a desire for change or to see a particular party in office.

In the US, incumbent politicians of both parties are likely to suffer from decreased popularity, however, it is going to be much harder to gather support than it was during 2008’s presidential elections, when there was such a great drive for change.

This could have a significant impact on the US 2010 midterms, which are to be held on Tuesday November 2nd. During this election, all of the 435 seats in the House of Representative are to be contested, along with 36 of the 100 Senate seats. There will also be elections for governorships in 38 states and a number of other state and local elections.

It seems likely that the Republicans will see their party gaining some seats in the House of Representatives, and possibly even becoming strong enough to take back control of the House. Many of the seats that are likely to change hands are currently Democratic. The strength of the predicted Republican gains might only be very moderate, however, and in order to wrest control of the House from the democrats, they would have to work against the current Democrat standing that has 39 more seats that is necessary to control the House of Representatives.

There have only been two cases in which, in the first midterm of their presidencies, more than 39 seats were lost to the election: in 1994 under President Clinton and in 1946 under President Truman. It is perfectly possible for the Democrats to lose control of the House in 2010, but it is perhaps equally likely that, despite their losses, they manage to just about keep control. There is still time for either party to strengthen their hold on the electorate.
